Ras Tafari Crowned Negus (King) 1928

On October 7, 1928, Empress Zewditu I, granted Ras Tafari Makonnen the throne of Shewa. This historical and revealing event elevated Ras Tafari Makonnen’s title to Negus.

Before the crowning of Ras Tafari Makonnen, he endured through a coup d’état. In September, a group of palace reactionaries including some courtiers of Empress Zewditu I, made a final attempt to overcome Tafari.

The 1928 Ethiopian coup d’état was an attempt by supporters of Empress Zewditu to rid her of the heir apparent and Crown Prince, Ras Tafari Makonnen. With Tafari gone, Zewditu would be the sole ruler of the Ethiopian Empire.

With popular support, as well as the support of the police, Tafari remained in reign throughout the controversy.

Therefore, on October 7, 1928, Ras Tafari Makonnen was crowned Negus (King).
